Chen Hong Qi

Chen Hong Qi was born in December of 1959, and graduated in 1986 from the Department of Painting of the Sichuan Fine Art Institute, majoring in oil painting. At the institute, he picked up the techniques of Western oil paintings, which are evident in his works today. As he continued to show great promise in his talents as an artist, he was invited by the Russian Academy of Arts to go to Russia to study oil painting in 2004.
Chen lived among the Basha Miao folks in 1990 as he observed how they lived through economic poverty and learned their traditions passed down by their ancestors for hundreds of years. Because of his experience, he is able to depict the folks authentically through his paintings and has won awards for these works.
He is currently an associate professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Guizhou Normal University.
