Chen Chu Dian

Chen Chu Dian (b. 1944-2021) graduated from the Shanghai Dance Academy in 1966 and worked in the Shanghai film industry for a while, being responsible for the set decorations. There, he was a member of the China National Artist Association, China National Watercolour Painting Artist Association, and Shanghai Watercolour Painting Research Institute. He also joined the Global Artists Committee of Asian Art Association in 2019.

In 1933, Chen moved to Singapore, where he would work on a series of historical oil paintings about the 2005 Revolution. One of the paintings from the series, titled “Sun Yat-sen in Chinatown” was touched by the then president of Singapore, SR Nathan, during the opening ceremony for his exhibition.

He is apt in painting human forms, fruits, and landscapes, with his expertise in oil and watercolour mediums. The tones and shades he employed in his paintings capture the essence of the subjects (i.e. fruits & landscapes) well.

His work, “Impression of Shanghai Morning Market”, had been selected for the China Watercolor Painting Exhibition and collected by the National Art Museum of China.
