Hei Feng

BORN: 1965
HOMETOWN: GANSU, CHINA
LIVES AND WORKS: USA

Hei Feng was born in 1965 in Gansu, China. He graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Central People’s University, where he studied oil painting and Chinese painting. In 1988, he became a teacher at the Research Institute of China Art. During that time, he created his unique art style, the “Black Wind Style”, which combines oil painting and Chinese style painting. He also created the “Timism Art Style”, wanting something that specifically both represented and transcended the present time. He immigrated to the USA in 1989.

Hei Feng immerses himself in his art by letting his feelings and deep thoughts about life and society flow through his brush, transferring these intense emotions onto his canvas. He believes in using his heart, rather than his hand, to paint, and holds an overwhelming love for his works, describing his painting process to be akin to “the conception of a new-born life.” He starts by getting inspired by anything ranging from a spiritual feeling, to visual stimulation, to intellectual enlightenment, then deciding whether that inspiration will best be conveyed through a two-dimensional or three-dimensional composition.

Since 2010, the record price for his works at an auction is US$116,190 for “DISTORTION”, sold at Sotheby's Beijing in 2013. To date, he has held more than 30 exhibitions across countries such as China, USA, France, Italy, Taiwan and Singapore.
